The 99-year-old actor shared how much his daily life has changed as he approaches his 100th birthday on December 13 \u2014 along with the realities of aging \u2014 in an essay published in\u00a0The Times<\/em> on November 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s frustrating to feel diminished in the world, physically and socially,\u201d the\u00a0Mary Poppins<\/em>\u00a0star admitted. \u201cI still get invitations to events or offers for gigs in New York or Chicago, but traveling takes so much out of me that I have to say no. Most of my visiting with people has to happen right here in my home.\u201d<\/p>\n

He described some of the \u201cphysical deterioration\u201d he has experienced in recent years, comparing it to the older characters he once portrayed on screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike those old characters, I\u2019m now a stooper, a shuffler, and a teeterer. My feet give me trouble, and I lie down as often as good manners will allow,\u201d Van Dyke wrote. \u201cThose fake old-timers smacked their dentures. I chew nicotine gum all day long \u2014 even decades after quitting smoking! My eyesight is so poor now that origami is out of the question.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted other challenges too \u2014 difficulty following group conversations, frustration with his hearing aids, and even the simple act of eating meals.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt mealtime I spill things, and when my wife Arlene [Silver] asks me to put on a clean shirt before we go out, I get impatient. \u2018It\u2019s got blueberry all over it,\u2019 she\u2019ll say. And I\u2019ll answer, \u2018Polka dots are in again!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the\u00a0Dick Van Dyke Show<\/em>\u00a0icon refuses to let these obstacles stop him from staying healthy. He revealed that he continues to go to the gym three times a week.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know why this is something I still want to do, but it is,\u201d he confessed. \u201cIf I miss too many gym days, I really can feel it \u2014 that stiffness sneaking up on me. If I let that set in, well, God help me.\u201d<\/p>\n

To keep himself motivated, he sets little \u201ccarrots\u201d to look forward to \u2014 like \u201ca huge smoothie or a frothy caffeine treat\u201d after a workout, or even a \u201cwell-earned nap.\u201d The gym also gives him deeper rewards: \u201ca sense of accomplishment to enjoy,\u201d a sharper mind, and what he describes as \u201ca full-body tingly exhilaration.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also shared details of his workout routine, which involves moving through a full circuit of gym machines without stopping.<\/p>\n

\u201cI start with the sit-up machine. Arlene says I could do 500, but that might be an exaggeration. Then I go through all the leg machines faithfully \u2014 my legs are two of my most cherished possessions. Then it\u2019s on to the upper body.\u201d<\/p>\n

Music, he said, is the secret to keeping him going. He hums, sings, and even dances his way from one machine to the next.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou heard me \u2014 dancing! And if I\u2019m really feeling it, I\u2019m not a quiet hummer; I\u2019m a full Broadway belter.\u201d<\/p>\n
