While the 98th Academy Awards won\u2019t be given out until March of 2026, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held its 16th Governors Awards on Sunday, November 16.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

There, several lifetime achievement Oscars were given out, with honorees including legendary film actor and producer Tom Cruise, choreographer and actress Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas.<\/p>\n

Country music icon Dolly Parton<\/a>\u00a0also received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, with her\u00a0\u201clifelong compassion,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0as exhibited in her\u00a0\u201cphilanthropy and in her ar<\/em>t,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>celebrated.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dolly has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Song, but has never won\u2026 until now.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the ceremony, the\u00a0Academy wrote<\/a>\u00a0that the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is awarded to her in recognition of\u00a0\u201cher decades-long humanitarian efforts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cShe has founded various charitable and philanthropic organizations, including the Dollywood Foundation, which was created in 1988 to inspire the children of East Tennessee \u2014 her home state \u2014 to achieve educational success.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cAdditionally, her literacy program, Dolly Parton\u2019s Imagination Library, launched in 1995 in honor of her father, has provided children with 285 million books,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0press release notes<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIt evolved into an international movement and remains the signature program of the Dollywood Foundation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Honorary Oscar For Humanitarian Efforts Awarded To Dolly Parton<\/h2>\n

For Dolly Parton, who is 79 and has had a career as an actress in addition to her work as a recording artist, receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is a particularly special distinction.<\/p>\n

According to the Academy, this is what the Board of Governors looks for in a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recipient:<\/p>\n

\u201c[This Oscar is given] to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jean Hersholt, the award\u2019s namesake, was a Hollywood actor who, in 1939, helped establish the Motion Picture Relief Fund \u2014 now known as the Motion Picture and Television Fund \u2014 which assists crew members and other employees of the film industry in receiving medical care.<\/p>\n

Introducing the award for Dolly Parton was one of her co-stars from\u00a09 to 5<\/em>\u00a0(1980), Lily Tomlin.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on how she first met Dolly, Lily shared that she had first seen Dolly perform in New York in 1977.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer manager \u2026 had booked her there to introduce her to a new audience, and, as you can imagine, she was sensational,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Lily recalled.<\/p>\n

A few years later, she noted that she met with Jane Fonda who had the screenplay for\u00a09 to 5<\/em>, but the film was, at that time, a straight drama. Offering Lily a part, Jane said it was her hope to switch the film from a drama to a comedy.<\/p>\n

Upon hearing Dolly on the radio, Jane found the film\u2019s missing piece, and the rest is history.<\/p>\n

Looking back on the making of\u00a09 to 5<\/em>, Lily shared that she was amazed by Dolly\u2019s professionalism, telling a story of how Dolly demonstrated her work ethic during the film\u2019s production.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>9 to 5\u00a0was Dolly\u2019s first movie, and she was fabulous,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Lily started.\u00a0\u201cDuring one of our rehearsals, I forgot a line and she recited it for me. I asked her how she knew my line, and she said, in her rapturous drawl \u2026 \u2018Well, I never made a movie and I thought I better memorize the whole darn script.’\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking more broadly, Lily went on to note that people often speak of Dolly\u2019s fake nails and her fake hair, but said,\u00a0\u201cI can\u2019t use \u2018fakery\u2019 with the word \u2018Dolly.\u2019 It doesn\u2019t suit her at all.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ultimately, Lily attributed Dolly\u2019s\u00a0\u201cauthenticity\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to why she was so deserving of the Academy\u2019s honor, having stated earlier that Dolly lived by the words of William Shakespeare:\u00a0\u201cTo Thine Own Self Be True.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Concluding her remarks, Lily said,\u00a0\u201cHer authenticity, her generosity, her concern for other people \u2014 for that reason, she really does deserve this honor, symbolized by the Oscar statuette.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She added,\u00a0\u201cShe is one of the people who remains in this world that everyone loves and respects.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Back in September,\u00a0Dolly announced<\/a>\u00a0that she had been\u00a0\u201cdealing with some health challenges,\u201d<\/em> adding that it meant her shows in Las Vegas this December would have to be canceled.<\/p>\n

Other public appearances have also been canceled.<\/p>\n

Similarly, her appearance at the Academy\u2019s Governors Awards was by video.<\/p>\n

Wearing gold to match her Oscar, Dolly was still her chipper self, and she shared from the heart about what the award meant to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up in a house of 12 kids,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Dolly stated.\u00a0\u201cNow, that alone teaches you how important sharing is. Don\u2019t get me wrong, we didn\u2019t have that much to share, but my momma and daddy showed me, by example, that the more you give, the more blessings come your way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Continuing, she said,\u00a0\u201cI have tried my whole life to live by their example, and I have been blessed more than I ever dreamed possible.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, she said,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s an honor just to be considered, but to receive this? I mean, that\u2019s a blessing of a lifetime, and I don\u2019t take this kind of thing lightly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Concluding her video statement, she said,\u00a0\u201c[This award] makes me want to dream up new ways to help lift people up, and isn\u2019t that what we\u2019re supposed to be here for?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
