Michelle Obama<\/a>\u00a0doesn\u2019t think the United States is ready for her \u2014 or any woman \u2014 to be president.<\/p>\n

Supporters of the former first lady, 61, have long hoped she would launch a presidential campaign, both before and after she and\u00a0Barack Obama<\/a>\u00a0left the White House for a final time in 2017.<\/p>\n

Social media posts and signs held up during the recent\u00a0“No Kings” protests<\/a>\u00a0pleaded for the launch of a \u201cMichelle 2028\u201d campaign, but she is not on board with the idea.<\/p>\n

During a\u00a0live chat<\/a>\u00a0about her new book,\u00a0The Look<\/em><\/a>, with\u00a0Tracee Ellis Ross<\/a> at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on Nov. 5, Michelle said she believes the U.S. \u201cain\u2019t ready\u201d for a woman in the White House, including herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, as we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain\u2019t ready,\u201d said the former first lady, referring to\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s victory over\u00a0Kamala Harris<\/a>\u00a0in the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n

“That\u2019s why I\u2019m like, ‘Don’t even look at me about running, \u2018cause you all are lying,’ ” added Michelle, before reiterating, \u201cYou’re not ready for a woman. You are not. So don’t waste my time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elaborating further as the BAM audience broke out into applause, the author said: \u201cWe got a lot of growing up to do, and there are still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though supporters continue to cling to the hope she may change her mind, Michelle has consistently\u00a0shut down calls for her to launch a presidential bid<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 or any other career in politics \u2014 since at least 2012.<\/p>\n

While appearing on\u00a0Today<\/em>\u00a0in celebration of the International Day of the Girl in 2018, anchor\u00a0Savannah Guthrie<\/a>\u00a0asked if the former first lady was interested in pursuing a career in politics, to which she replied: \u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n

“I\u2019ve never wanted to be a politician,\u201d Michelle continued at the time. \u201cNothing has changed in me. I want to serve. \u2026 There are so many ways to make an impact. Politics is not my thing. It\u2019s as simple as that.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also\u00a0dismissed the idea years earlier<\/a>, before she and Barack, 64, left the White House.<\/p>\n

During a South by Southwest panel moderated by\u00a0Queen Latifah<\/a>\u00a0in 2016, Michelle explicitly stated that she \u201cwill not run for president,\u201d citing then-teenage daughters,\u00a0Sasha<\/a>, 24, and\u00a0Malia<\/a>, 27, as one reason.<\/p>\n

A subsequent round of highly praised speeches condemning then-GOP nominee Trump, 79, fueled new speculation that Michelle may have changed her mind, but her aversion to politics remained steadfast.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Michelle] will never run for office,\u201d he said while calling into SiriusXM\u2019s\u00a0Sway in the Morning<\/em>\u00a0in October 2016. \u201cShe is as talented and brilliant a person as there is, and I could not be prouder of her, but Michelle does not have the patience or the inclination to actually be a candidate herself.<\/p>\n
