When it came time for the Kennedy Center Honors to name its 2018 batch of honorees,\u00a0Reba McEntire<\/a>\u00a0served as country music\u2019s representative.\u00a0Kelly Clarkson<\/a>\u00a0stepped up to pay tribute to her with a performance of \u201cFancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Kennedy Center Honors\u2019\u00a0website<\/a>, this prestigious honor is bestowed upon\u201dexceptional artists who have made enduring and indelible marks on our culture<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0Anyone who followed McEntire\u2019s career knows she fits that definition like a glove.<\/strong><\/p>\n

McEntire was recognized alongside the other honorees (including\u00a0Hamilton<\/em>\u00a0co-creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Cher, and several others) during a ceremony held on December 2, 2018. Other artists took to the stage to celebrate the honorees by performing covers of their famous works.<\/p>\n

Some of the most meaningful country covers have emerged from past Kennedy Center Honors ceremonies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For example, when\u00a0Dolly Parton<\/a>\u00a0was recognized at the 2006 ceremony, her own duet partner, Kenny Rogers, honored her with\u00a0\u201cIslands in the Stream.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0He surprised Parton by walking onstage to join Carrie Underwood on the song.<\/p>\n

Parton enjoyed the performance so much that she truly jumped out of her seat.<\/p>\n

Are Reba McEntire & Kelly Clarkson Related?<\/h3>\n

Many people gave a standing ovation following one powerhouse performance in McEntire\u2019s honor at the 2018 ceremony. That performance was delivered by Kelly Clarkson, who shares a special connection with McEntire.<\/p>\n

In addition to being good friends and frequent collaborators, Clarkson and McEntire share family connections.<\/p>\n

In 2013, Clarkson married Brandon Blackstock, the son of McEntire\u2019s then-husband Narvel Blackstock (they divorced in 2015). Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock eventually split as well, but she and McEntire still considered themselves family.<\/p>\n

Sadly,\u00a0Brandon Blackstock died<\/a>\u00a0in 2025 following a private battle with cancer.<\/p>\n

Because of Clarkson and McEntire\u2019s, the tears were already flowing between the two singers at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2018 before Clarkson started her performance.\u00a0She spoke of how McEntire impacted her life, not just as an artist, but as a family member.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the emotions already running high, McEntire failed to hold back her tears as Clarkson started singing \u201cFancy,\u201d one of her most iconic songs.<\/p>\n

Clarkson\u2019s cover left many audience members visibly impressed. As the camera panned over the crowd, people seemed stunned. Some even mouthed \u201cwow\u201d whenever Clarkson crushed a powerful note.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s no denying that McEntire was most impressed with Clarkson\u2019s cover. She remained teary-eyed the entire time.<\/p>\n
