The documentary I Am: Celine Dion gives viewers a full picture of the singer\u2019s emotional and physical struggles with stiff person syndrome \/ YouTube screenshot<\/figcaption>More and more has been coming out about Celine\u2019s highly anticipated documentary,\u00a0I Am: Celine Dion<\/i>. As far as documentaries go, it\u2019s setting a new bar for personal content shared. One particularly memorable sequence of scenes shows Dion championing through a performance of \u201cRiver Deep \u2013 Mountain High\u201d by Tina Turner, only to then be shown strapped to a gurney, tended to by medics.This was all by careful design, explained director Irene Taylor, who won the Peabody Award for\u00a0Hear and Now<\/i>\u00a0and received an Emmy nomination for\u00a0Beware the Slenderman<\/i>. At least, it was by design after the fact. She just happened to be filming when the personal health crisis kicked up; but there was never a debate about\u00a0not<\/i>\u00a0including such grim health scares.\u201cWe were just trying to figure out what was happening,\u201d\u00a0shared<\/a>\u00a0Taylor. \u201cAnd as Celine likes to say, \u2018do not flinch.\u2019 And we did not flinch. We knew enough to shoot now and talk about it later \u2026 but there was never a question of whether or not we would include it. I did not show the film to Celine until it was done and the first thing\u00a0she said to me was, \u2018I think this film will help me\u2019<\/a>\u00a0and after a pause, \u2018Don\u2019t cut anything away from that scene.\u2019 I think she felt validated and said, \u2018Now people will understand.\u2019\u201d<\/figure>\n

The singer has an extensive regimen she follows to address SPS<\/figcaption>That\u2019s because Taylor\u2014and soon audiences viewing\u00a0I Am: Celine Dion<\/em>\u2014was privy to some truly heartbreaking scenes. For example, in the documentary, Celine is often seen succumbing to tears, both in general frustration and out of grief, for how SPS has seized so much control of her powerful, beloved voice. Because of SPS, Dion canceled all of her 2023 and 2024 tours, cutting her off from something she treasured that might have provided an emotional reprieve from all SPS was putting her body through.At one point, the documentary shows Celine briefly awash in triumph after trying to sing for the first time in two years\u2014only to become ensnared in the muscle spasms characteristic of SPS.
